FLASHBACK
The "Guilty, guilty guilty" flashback this morning made me happier than anything has in a while. I came and saw you speak in Kansas City a year or two ago. Started reading Doonesbury when I was about eight years old -- that is my touchstone of American history from the late Sixties on. That strip this morning took me back to all of my old beloved Doonesbury cartoon collections, which sit on my shelf even today. We need your voice now more than we ever have. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

NEXT
Coming next: the "Honk if you think he's guilty" bumper stickers.

HARD TO CHOOSE
I remember vividly the strips during the Nixon years, especially " Guilty, guilty, guilty!" from Mark. Cracked me up then, and it still does. But if we're comparing the less-than-desirable traits of Nixon and Trump -- it's hard to choose the ultimate villain.

WHAT A STIR
I remember what a stir that "Guilty, guilty, guilty!!" caused the first time. I believe it caused Doonesbury to move from the comic section to the editorial page in my local newspaper.
-
REMEMBER
Mark, I remember it well, especially now that Kelly has started to Haldemanize.
-
GORD DOWNIE
Many thanks to the Doonesbury team for today's video remembering Gord Downie of Canada's band, The Tragically Hip. A lovely tribute to one of our national treasures -- a man whose very soul was a poem.
-
OH DEAR
Oh dear. The 40-years-ago-today and 45-years-ago-today strips on the Flashback page are particularly pertinent and poignant this week.
-
THE SAME
Today's Classic strip: The more things change, the more they stay the same...
-
THIS ONE
I know this one! It's the stateroom scene from A Night at the Opera by the Marx Brothers!
-
HONEY'S MARRIAGE
At least Honey's marriage to Duke lasted long enough for them to co-found Honeydukes Chocolates in Hogsmeade Village, Scotl -- no -- wait a minute...
-
EDITORIAL CARTOONING
I'm still blown away by Doonesbury. So-very-smart editorial cartooning. Trudeau, Pat Oliphant, and Signe Wilkinson are the best. I wish G.B. would go back to the daily strip...

MICHAEL CLEVELAND
Thank you so much for today's video introducing me to Michael Cleveland! He's wonderful!
-
TIMING
Timing is all. The morning after I watch a TV doco on the pros and cons of legalisng pot here in the UK, Zonker reports in on his latest, presumably already street-legal US crop. Brilliant.

STRIP
Thanks. Just thanks, for all the pleasure and funny pain you've provided over the years. Your strip is a National Treasure.

DE NILE
A boating accident on de Nile? What a lovely simile. I remember those days. There was a lot of denial on many sides, then and for a long time: AIDS was a punishment from God, including on rape victims and their babies; HIV wasn't the cause of AIDS; the FDA knew of cures but wouldn't approve them. I had Nigerian friends assure me with great certainty that the virus was a CIA plot to kill off all Africans. The worst delusion I know of was that sex with a virgin (in practice, raping little girls) could cure AIDS.
For years now we have had real knowledge. One of the most important things we have known for a while is that AIDS patients with the virus suppressed cannot normally pass HIV on, so that San Francisco and other places have detailed plans to get to zero new cases. Here's a link to the International Journal of Preventive Medicine's "Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination, and Zero AIDS-Related Deaths: Feasible Goals or Ambitious Visions on the Occasion of the World AIDS Day?"

OH WELL
A big thank you for the "Oh Well" video the other day -- one of my all-time favorites from my college years. Great album too, Then Play On. Thanks for stirring the memories.
-
HEF
Hef is dead and I'm worried that the silk-pajama and velvet-smoking-jacket trades won't be able to take the fall in demand. I see Boopsie was Babe of Honor at Hef's 1989 nuptials. Do you have pictures?
-
REMISSION
Australia is heading towards being AIDS-free. I think the current CLASSICS story arc on Andy's remission and (spoiler alert) eventual succumbing to the disease, is among the very finest work Mr Trudeau has done.
-
FEMINISM
Boopsie has come a long way since the Walden commune daze, when Nichole tried to interest her in feminism.

MISSING LINK
On the FLASHBACKS page, the 20-Years-Ago-Today strip is still being represented by a string of bad code. What is the correct archive link for that strip? I'd like to keep up with the flow. Thanks.
Editor's Note:We have a tech repair pending on that. Meanwhile, here's a link to today's 20-Years-Ago strip, from which you'll be able to click forward all week. Sorry for the inconvenience.
