HURT
I can respect "My honor, not yours," but this is B.D.'s wife. If someone did that to my wife, I would take names and pay visits. Not because of some caveman "property" issue, not because of some patriarchal obligation. If someone hurt the woman I loved, then they hurt me, even indirectly.

B.D.
Re: BRAVO. Actually, I'm not sure B.D.'s heart is in the right place. When he finally agreed to take Boopsie out to a restaurant after his infidelity on the cruise ship, he entered her in a Wet T-Shirt Contest! If she gave him a list of names, he'd be on it.

BRAVO
A million thank-yous for the last panel of today's strip. In five simple words ("It's my honor, not yours"), GBT managed to point out the essential fallacy behind an entire list of troubling traditions, from girls pledging their virginity till marriage (to their dads!) to the horror that is honor killings. A woman's sexuality belongs to her, not to any man in her life. B.D.'s heart's in the right place, but this isn't his battle. Bravo, bravo.

DISCRIMINATION
In the strip 35 years ago today, young Howie says that the country wants sex discrimination in the face of the failing effort to pass the ERA. Now in 2016, the country suffers the prospect of a president-elect whose words, campaign, appointments, and supporters advocate not only sex discrimination but also discrimination on the basis of race, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, and more. It's sad and infuriating that we still need to fight these battles. Discrimination dies hard. I'll be pleased and surprised if Trump does anything to advance the country's long national struggle to overcome discrimination and its many harms.

REPLACED
The 35-years-ago Flashback strip from 11-24-81 makes we wish we could find out whatever happened to Ellie and Howie. I expect that the "B" on Howie's baseball cap has been replaced with "Make America Great Again."

SOUND FAMILIAR?
The 35-years-ago-today-Flashback-strip from 1981, about the battle for the Equal Rights Amendment, has Howie telling Ellie "The boys won fair and square!...The country wants sex discrimination." Sound familiar?

YOUR STRIP
Hey Garry, I want you to know that Doonesbury is the only comic I bother to read in the San Francisco Chronicle. I never miss the Sunday, and I check out the dailies when I notice them. So cool, and I love your politics. Today I read all the quotes about Trump's incipient presidency on the MUDLINE tickertape you have running across the top of the home page. It mirrors my thinking. Your strip is great, steady, valuable, necessary. Thanks so very much, and please please please keep it coming.

HELPED
Your strip about Der Gröpenfuhrer helped me no end. I will no longer cry over Mr. Trump, I will happily laugh at him.
-
NEW HOST
I love that you brought Arnold Schwarzenegger back in Sunday's strip, since he is going to be the new host of Celebrity Apprentice.
-
GREAT EXAMPLE
Today's strip is a great example of using euphemism to justify one's bad actions, both to others and to oneself. This is pointed out in Steven Pinker's book The Better Angels of Our Nature. He quotes Orwell's description of how bombing villages and mass imprisonment are called "pacification" or "elimination of unreliable elements."
-
SECOND CLASS
Trump is the Gröpenfuhrer second class. Thanks for all the laughs over the years. Keep 'em coming.
-
ICON
Well, now we know what the new presidential icon will be in the strip. Brilliant delivery.
-
MOURNING
I have recommended today's strip to every woman on my email list. While we are all in deep mourning for our hero Hillary, your work makes it more bearable with humor. I have great admiration for you and for your talented partner Jane.

BBC VIDEO
Thanks for the BBC video on Saturday, "Is Donald Trump Racist?" It is strange to hear a white man, after white men have run America for three hundred years, whining about not getting to talk when he wants.
-
CRITICIZING
I wonder if you realize that in Trump's USA you will be among the first imprisoned for criticizing the President. Sainted Founder John Adams was able to make it a crime to do so in print. Although this was ruled unconstitutional I fully expect a Trump administration to try again.

WOW
Surveying the strips featured on the Doonesbury Flashbacks page today, I see that: 45 years ago there's a typewriter on the secretary's desk; 40 years ago, there a phone with a cord on Rick's bedstand, and a TV with bunny ears in Ginny's kitchen; 35 years ago there's both a typewriter and a desk phone with cord on Rick's desk; 20 years ago there's a pager on Mike's belt. Wow. They really are Flashbacks!

MIKE AND RUFUS
Re the Flashbacks Page strip with Mike and Rufus from November 14, 1971: Miles Davis as Attorney General is looking pretty good right now. Even if he is dead.

STUMPED
In a difficult week for you and the world I've enjoyed the goings-on at the minimum security facility. Today's punchline left me stumped -- but through the miracle of Dr. Google I now remember Robert Bork. Take care in the days and weeks ahead.

THE BRIGHT SIDE
On the bright side, GBT's next Trump book won't take 30 years to compile. Assuming books are still legal.

COMFORT
Thank you for your video selection today, Americana Awards: "The Weight." It is giving me comfort as I am in grief and shock today and am struggling with the realities of the election.
